Anglesey Half Marathon and 10k

Menai Bridge was the setting for the Anglesey Half Marathon and 10k on March 3rd. The route was a challenging undulating course with over 2000 entries combined in both races.

Representing Aberystwyth in the 10km was Bethan Rees finishing in 48:03.

In the Half marathon Aberystwyth had three runners, Gwenda James running 2:22:16, Chloe Barron finishing in 2:33:35 and Gary Wyn Davies finishing in third place overall in 1:15:52.

Rhyl 10 mile race – Saturday 23rd Feb.

Shelley, Theresa, Ed, Lina, Paul Williams and Elizabeth Kensler headed to the flat & fast Rhyl 10 mile race which started and finished on Rhyl promenade, heading east along the prom and over to Prestatyn. The course then deviated inland through to a small industrial area to complete 5 miles before re-joining the prom and returning to the start/finish. The wind usually plays a big part in this race due to the exposed nature of the course, where a beautifully strong tailwind advantage would usually be wiped out and more by a headwind akin to a brick wall, but not today, as the unseasonal conditions meant that even Rhyl had only light to moderate winds making the possibility of a fast day all the more likely.

A big entry of 565 runners headed out of the start pen and onto the promenade. Ed Land was in amongst the top five and remained there for most of the day. I was further back in the field, trying to keep up with the top female runner Sarah Louise Cumber of Halifax Harriers. Trying to maintain a pace of 6 minutes per mile proved a bit too much of an ask as we went through 5 miles in 30.54, with the headwind to content with on the return. Passing Theresa, Lina and Elizabeth coming in the opposite direction. The encouragement from the other runners is on par with any big race I’ve been to, if mot surpassing it, with plenty of cheers from the runners on the other side of the prom during that final 5 miles.

The return leg involved a cheeky deviation into the dunes, around a footpath and under a bridge and a climb back to the prom which certainly shocked the legs at that point in the race (approx. 7.5 miles).

I’d let a fair few runners past me at this point as the effort took its toll and so a quick bit of maths at 8 miles to see if a PB was still on the cards, and it was going to be touch and go. The 10 mile distance is quite a rare one, with my PB coming from the popular Teifi 10 a few years ago. I can only think of 3 races at this distance in Wales, the other being the Elan 10 in November.

A late rally saw me claw a PB by a handful of seconds and 20th place on the day which was a welcome surprise considering how I felt on the return leg.

Ed had a strong race, slower than last year by his own admission, but still good enough for 6th overall and 3rd V40.

Paul Williams, deep into his tough marathon training programme was, like Ed, running on very heavy legs and despite this, came in with a fantastic 1.08 for 42nd place.

Theresa Sharland, another Aber AC in the throngs of heavy marathon training mileage surprised herself with a 5-minute PB over her effort in Novembers Elan 10, coming 44th female and 14th in category.

Elizabeth Kensler had a very respectable 1.33 for 107th position with Lina Land coming in at under the two-hour mark with a solid 1.56.27 for 249th place and so the Aber AC team all did the club proud in the windiest part of Wales (except for Borth beach).
