Race Report for Aberystwyth 10k 2016

 UKA Licence Number 2016-27105

Certificate of Course Accuracy Wales Number 15/466

Congratulations to everyone who completed the race! We had a record number of participants which means a record amount of money raised for local charities. The weather was kind to us and the new bandstand was a fantastic venue. Many thanks to all our enthusiastic marshals and all the other helpers.

Race results are available on www.myraceresults.co.uk

The course record wasn't broken but there were many PBs due to the excellent conditions.

Thank you to all our sponsors:

The Cambrian News of course, our main sponsors, who provide the medals and bib numbers.

PD's Diner who provided bottled water for the finish line.

MW Scaffolding who provided the Start/Finish gantry.

Greggs who provided the delicious mince pies.

Castell Howell who provided the very welcome tea, coffee and sugar.

The new Aberystwyth Tesco's for donating many prizes - and 2 marshals!

Mountain Warehouse for donating children's prizes.

Our course record sponsors, Cactws and Harddwch Siriol Beauty, get to keep their vouchers for another year!

Thanks, too, for the support from St John's Ambulance - we couldn't hold the race without them but they weren't very busy yesterday, fortunately; thanks to Raynet for spotting race numbers at various locations round the route and relaying the details to our commentator, to keep the spectators informed of how the race was developing; thanks to our wonderful commentator himself, Andy Davies, who kept us entertained for several hours; and thanks to the Air Cadets for their sterling work at the 5k water station.

Thanks to all the photographers who turned up and whose photos are already on their websites or Facebook pages: Through a Lens Photo (Facebook), Dan Wyre Photography, Daniel Thorogood (Aberystwyth AC Facebook page), and Steven Wride photography.

And of course, thank you to all our lovely runners, we hope you enjoyed the race and that if you were running for your own charity, you reached your target. It was great to see so many smiling faces in the winter sunshine!

Congratulations to the winners Aled Hughes of Aberystwyth AC, who finished in 33:12, and Carol Glover, 40:42. The running club who was first to get 3 runners through the finish was Aberystwyth AC, and the winners of the Team trophy (after a recount!) were Aber Graduates - well done all.

 The Race:

The route

The start and finish are North of the bandstand, opposite the main entrance of the Marine Hotel.

The route goes to the South end of the prom, round the harbour, down the road under Trefechan Bridge, onto the red-painted cycle path, and follows the cycle path behind the football club and police station.

Continue on the right-hand track towards Starling Cloud and the 3k mark, then follow the path where it bears right, and turn right onto the footbridge leading to Min y Ddol.

Follow Min y Ddol to where it joins the main road at Pen y Bont hill, turn left down this road then sharp left under the road bridge. Immediately turn sharp left again up the ramp onto the pavement.

Follow the pavement all the way to Blaendolau gate, taking the short cut through the newly-planted Coed Aber.

The 5k water station will be on the grassy bit just as you go through Blaendolau gate.
Continue along the path and turn right just before the green footbridge, following the path round the playing fields and under the road bridge again. Keep straight on behind Morrisons then turn right on the gravel track past the entrances to Cae Ceredig and Ystwyth Surgery. Turn left at the main road and follow the pavement till it rejoins the cycle track at the police station, then the rest is the reverse of the outward journey!

Note that the 1km and 9km markers are in the same place, as are the 2km and 8km markers. The 3km and 7km markers are opposite each other on the cycle path / footpath respectively. The race will, of course, be fully marked and marshalled!

The
Aberystwyth Charity 10k is a fast, flat race following roads and paths around the town that takes runners along the promenade, through the harbour, and around the Rheidol river's edge to finish back at the race registration.  At Carl Williams' instigation the race was first held in 1999. Since then it has grown into one of the most popular flat road races in mid-Wales.

The first race was jointly organised between Carl, Aberystwyth Athletic Club and Marie Curie Cancer Care to raise funds for the charity. It was an immediate success so the event continues and in 2001 Macmillan Cancer Support took over Marie Curie Cancer Care's role.

In 2010 the race was adopted by the Cambrian News as part of their 150 year celebrations.

Cash prizes are awarded to runners in all age categories.

The Dolphin Trophy is awarded to the fastest finishing team (not athletic club) comprising at least three runners, using the fastest 3 times from each team.
